Why replant lilies?
Lilies are perennial flowers. Beginners make the mistake of thinking that lilies do not need to be periodically replanted in a new area. The misconception quickly disappears when after 3–5 years, instead of large, spectacular petals, a small number of small buds are visible in the flower garden or there is no flowering at all.
Lilies form daughter bulbs over the summer. Over the years, a nice bouquet of lilies grows in place of one stem. It looks impressive, but in fact, not one, but several plants grow from one hole at once. And they all have to huddle in a small area. This affects the development of plants, their flowering and health.
When replanting lilies is necessary, the time of their growth in the flowerbed will tell you. These flowers are grown in the same place for 3–5 years, the specific timing depends on the variety.

When is the best time to replant lilies?
It is best to replant lilies in the second half of August or early September. If the autumn turned out to be warm, then you can replant in early October. The deadline will vary depending on the region.
Replanting begins approximately four weeks after the lilies bloom.
- in spring It is necessary to divide and replant the bulbs before the plant begins to actively grow. Otherwise, there will be no flowering this year.
- In summer It is better not to replant lilies unless necessary.

Reference
Asiatic lilies are considered the most unpretentious. They easily take root even when transplanted in bloom.
When should you not replant lilies?
Lilies are not replanted just before winter. The transplanted bulb needs to take root before the onset of constant cold weather. It takes about 4-5 weeks for a lily bulb to take root and prepare for wintering.
Council
Monitor the climate and weather to determine the appropriate timing for replanting in late fall.
How to tell from a plant that it’s time to replant it
You can understand that lilies need to be divided and replanted by the following signs:
- The buds began to become smaller, their number noticeably decreased. In advanced cases, there may be no buds at all.
- The bush has grown and thickened.
- The plant has stopped growing.
- Pests or signs of disease have appeared on lilies that have been growing in one place for several years in a row.
- The leaves turn yellow and dry, and flowering is sparse and short-lived. The soil may be lacking nutrients.
- The bulbs in the ground rot.
- Young shoots have difficulty emerging from the ground. They grow weak and crooked. This happens from overgrown bulbs and roots.

Timing for transplanting lilies in spring
In the spring, they begin to transplant lilies when the return frosts have ended and the soil has warmed up to +8…+10° C. In many regions, such indicators occur at the end of April or in the first half of May.
- The weather should be consistently warm, and according to forecasters, no sudden cold snap or frost is expected.
- The air temperature during the day should not be lower than +10…+12° C, and at night it should not fall below 0° C.
- If there are already sprouts, their height should not exceed 10–12 cm.
If the weather is dry, then after planting the lilies need to be watered more often. In rainy weather, atmospheric moisture is enough for growth.
Reference
Lilies are very sensitive to sudden cold snaps and recurrent frosts.
When to replant lilies in summer
Replanted in the second half of July and August. The time to transplant lilies will depend on the varietal characteristics and weather. After flowering, at least 25–30 days should pass.
- Replanting is best done in cloudy weather.
- You need to ensure that the soil does not dry out.
- Mulching the soil helps a lot.
If the weather is hot, replant in the evening and water the holes daily for several days after replanting.
Important
Three weeks after flowering, the foliage of the lilies will begin to turn yellow and dry out. These are signs that the transplant can begin.
When to replant lilies in the fall (after flowering)
Autumn transplantation of lilies will be considered optimal. In autumn, the plant does not spend energy on growing green shoots and buds, but directs all its energy to growing roots. The plants bloom the next year and grow healthy.
After flowering, at least a month must pass so that the young bulbs have time to form, and only after this the lilies can begin to be replanted.
Council
When the flowers of lilies wither, they should be picked off or trimmed immediately so that the lily does not waste energy on ripening the seeds.
Conditions for when to transplant lilies to another place after flowering in the fall:
- The lilies have faded, the buds have dried up, the shoots are drying up.
- The weather is cool, the air temperature during the day ranges from +10 to +14 °C, and at night it does not fall below +5 °C.
- It rains periodically.
- According to the weather forecast, about 2–3 weeks remain until the air temperature drops permanently to -3°…-6° C.
- Optimal soil temperature: +10 °C. If it is higher, the bulb may begin to grow, which will negatively affect it later.

Timing for transplanting different types of lilies
Bulbs can be replanted in spring, summer and autumn. The key to a good transplant is the correct timing and careful care. Then the lily will bloom actively, not get sick and multiply fruitfully.
- Asian. Every 1–3 years, they grow quite quickly. Asiatic lilies can be replanted throughout the warm season, even with flowers and buds. Provided that the transplant is done as carefully as possible with minimal damage to the roots, or by transferring it from a pot to open ground.
- Eastern. Once every two or three years. In spring – before the shoots grow more than 10 cm, in August or September.
- Species. In 3–4 years. In spring – before active growth begins and in the second half of August or early autumn.
- Tubular. Every year before flowering or a month after flowering. If the plant was bought in a store in a pot (ZKS – with a closed root system), then it can be planted at any time during the warm season, even with a flower, using the transshipment method.
- American hybrids. Divide and plant once every 10 years. In the spring, before the start of active growth, and a month after the flowering period. Replant until September.

General recommendations for transplantation
- Lilies are planted in a sunny place protected from the wind.
- The new site is carefully dug up and fertilizers, organic or mineral, are applied.
- Lily bulbs are dug up and transplanted to a new location in one day. They dug up the bulb and immediately planted it in the hole.
- Only healthy planting material is planted. Sick, rotten and severely damaged bulbs are discarded. The rest are treated with any fungicide before planting: Skor, Topaz, copper sulfate, Hom. Or use a medium solution of potassium permanganate and immerse the bulbs for 15–20 minutes.
- It is best to replant using the transshipment method with a lump of earth on the roots.
- Planting pattern: distance between holes is 15–25 cm. Small onions are deepened by 10–15 cm, medium-sized ones by 15–20 cm, and the largest ones by 20–25 cm.
