The best roses for the Moscow region

Growing spectacular, lushly blooming roses in the Moscow region once seemed to me an impossible task. However, with the right selection of varieties, it is easy to create a luxurious rose garden that will be the envy of southerners. Each group of roses has its own stars, which amaze with their luxurious blooms and become a worthy decoration of the garden.

Climbing roses for the Moscow region

The most stable group of roses for the Moscow region are, perhaps, climbing roses.

  • Varieties suitable for the climate are resistant.
  • Flowering is spectacular and long lasting.
  • Climbing roses are the easiest to plant for the winter.

Both ramblers and climbers always lie under a 30-centimeter shelter, thanks to which they find themselves under the snow and winter well.

varieties of climbing roses for the Moscow region

New Dawn (New Dawn)

One of the most unpretentious climbing roses is the variety New Dawn.

  1. It is characterized by increased winter hardiness and strong shoot growth. She once spent a frosty winter with little snow in my garden under one layer of cardboard. This did not affect her health at all.
  2. This is the only rose that can grow in the shade of a fence.
  3. It is almost not susceptible to black spotting.
  4. The only negative is the small flowers, which now seem a little inconspicuous to me.
  5. The variety has a rather long flowering period from mid-June. He goes on vacation from the end of August. In September it pleases with only rare flowers.
  6. The buds cannot withstand frost of -2 ° C.

There is a rose in my garden New Dawn grows in 2 variants:

  • on a trunk (the most advantageous option for it is a 2-meter height of the trunk);
  • like a climbing one.

Perennial Blue

An absolutely stable, spectacular and unpretentious novelty is the variety Perennial Blue. Roses have lilac-purple inflorescences in the form of long racemes located parallel to the ground. In 2 years, the rose completely wrapped itself around a 2-meter arch in my garden near Moscow.

  1. The rose blooms twice. Moreover, the first wave of flowering is more modest than the second.

  2. The first flowering occurs in June, the flowers are located on the shoots of the previous year.

  3. The second flowering occurs on new shoots, begins in July and lasts until the end of August. The flower clusters are much longer and more luxuriant than during the first flowering.

  4. Roses have soft shoots, and laying them down for the winter is a pleasure.

  5. The shoots are able to curl in a spiral. However, it is better not to allow this, because in the fall it will take a lot of time to untangle them and remove them from the support.

In addition to the lilac color, there is also a variety with white inflorescences – Perennial Blush. It is also easy to care for and looks especially impressive against a dark background.

Camelot

Relatively new variety Camelot did not show itself in all its glory right away. The first 2 years it bloomed with inconspicuous single flowers that lasted only a few days. It turned out that the rose needed time to gain strength, as they say, “grow.”

  1. In 3 years, the rose grew to 2.5 m and produced about 12 shoots. Every year their number increases.
  2. And during flowering it began to behave differently: its buds dissolve evenly, spread out over a month and a half.

  3. Each inflorescence contains 5-7 buds of a soft pink color with interesting shading. True, the rose blooms once, although the catalogs state that it blooms twice.

  4. It has minimal requirements for winter shelter, which makes me very happy.

The most difficult thing is to lay down the thick woody shoots. I use a heavy wooden shield as a load, which also serves as her only shelter. When bending this, like any other climbing rose, for the winter, you need to bend the ends of the shoots to form an “arc”. If you bend the shoots from the root, a break cannot be avoided.

Amadeus (Amadeus)

The rose also demonstrates excellent qualities Amadeus. Its bright burgundy-red inflorescences, 5-11 pieces collected in brushes, are a real decoration of the site. The only difficulty in care is the rigid shoots, which need to be laid in several stages for the winter so as not to break.

Flammentanz

Popular rose Flammentanc known for its unpretentiousness. However, in my garden, on the contrary, it did not show its best side. Given her unpretentiousness, I gave her a place in partial shade, near the fence. As it turned out, it was in vain, because the rose froze in growth and was susceptible to black spotting.

I believe that it can only be unpretentious in ideal conditions and in full sun. But in my garden there are few such vacant places, and they are given to hybrid tea roses. Therefore, due to lack of space, I had to sort Flammentanc refuse.

Rosarium Uetersen

The list of climbing roses is completed by an unrivaled variety of beauty. Rosario Uetersen, which I deliberately placed at the end of the list. At first it made me worry: it didn’t produce growth and wintered very poorly, the branches froze 1/3. As it turned out, the rose needed time to adapt to the climate of the site. In the conditions of my garden it took about 5 years. Time passed, and the rose turned into a real beauty.

  1. At the moment, this is the only rose that does not have “legs” exposed. It manages to grow in height and generously produces new shoots from the roots.

  2. In terms of the splendor of flowering, it has no equal in the climbing group.

  3. Double flowers, collected 12-15 pieces in each brush, make me admire this rich beauty every time.

  4. There are no breaks in flowering.

  5. The petals can withstand even October frosts down to -5 °C.

Now the rose is 11 years old, her height is 1.5 m, and every year she only becomes more magnificent.

Hybrid tea roses for the Moscow region

I didn’t decide to start a group of hybrid tea roses right away. I was frightened by the talk that the varieties were extremely unstable in the climate near Moscow. I really wanted to grow real goblet-shaped flowers on long stems – the kind of roses that are sold in flower shops.

The secret to successfully growing hybrid tea roses in the Moscow region is choosing the right breeder.

They have the greatest winter hardiness and frost resistance. William Cordes roses (German roses W. Kordes) and David Austin (English roses David Austin). From these groups you can safely choose any varieties; all of them are tolerant of winters near Moscow.

But from buying roses Average (Meilland) it is better to abstain. All of them are grafted onto a rootstock that is not winter-hardy in our conditions. In the case when a particular variety has particularly sunk into the soul at Meyan’s company, you can look for it from another originator, for example, from Cordes, where the rootstock is more winter-hardy.

Acapella

In my garden, 2 varieties of hybrid tea roses demonstrate particular resistance to climate adversity, one of them is a two-color variety Acapella. I chose it because of the contrasting colors: the petals are crimson on the front side and white on the back. For me, this rose has grown above the stated height and reached 1.5 m. The rose is distinguished by its double, and in a warm, favorable autumn, triple flowering.

My Girl

Snow White My Girl looks impressive next to the variety Acapella. It also grows much higher than its normal height during the season. Blooms three times at intervals of 2 weeks. Her pointed tips of the petals make her a true queen among the hybrid tea group.

Henri Matisse (Henri Matisse) and Claude Monet (Claude Monet)

Roses Henri Matisse and Claude Monet from “Great Artists” series. Like other varieties in the series, they have hatched petals, are extremely unpretentious, and bloom continuously.

It so happened that the year before last I had to replant Claude Monet in the very heat (it was drowned out by LO-hybrid lilies) and cut off radically. The rose did not even notice the transplant, but by autumn it had grown an excellent mass of leaves.

Piano

Another bright representative of the group of hybrid tea roses Piano with a deep red tone and burgundy tint of the petals.

  1. Its flowers are in the shape of a bowl, each of which is “stuffed” with so many petals that it is impossible to count.

  2. The rose has strong shoots up to 1 m tall and beautiful glossy foliage.

  3. A pleasant point is the ability of roses to maintain an attractive appearance even after prolonged rains, which is characteristic of few varieties.

  4. Winter hardiness is excellent.

After 20 years of dealing with roses, I came to the conclusion that you can grow any hybrid tea roses. The main thing is to make a common rose garden for them, and not plant one each in flower beds. The larger the area of the rose garden, the more air space there is, which means the chances of a safe winter increase.

My rose garden measures 9X3 m. In the center (where the ground does not freeze even in severe frosts) I planted hybrid tea roses Acapella, My Girl, etc. Along the edges I planted a group of floribunda and ground cover (for example, Aspirin Rose), on the sides Claude Monet and Henri Matisse. Although they belong to the hybrid tea group, in terms of winter hardiness they will outperform groundcovers.

Floribunda roses for the Moscow region

Floribunda are unpretentious and winter-hardy. Roses of this group are distinguished by multi-flowering: several flowers are formed on one shoot.

Let’s Celebrate

In the floribunda group, the rose made a strong impression Let’s Celebrate – a novelty of recent years. In the conditions of the Moscow region, it blooms continuously and so abundantly that I do not have time to cut off the faded flowers. True, it is not necessary to do this with her; after a while she resets them herself.

  • The beauty blooms from mid-June to mid-September,
  • does not stretch,
  • keeps a compact shape.

Eyes for You (Aiz fo Yu)

Another unique rose Eyes for You really so good that it invariably attracts attention. It happens that it is confused with peonies – the flower looks so unusual.

  • The rose is one of the first to bloom in the rose garden, already at the end of May.

  • It blooms twice, but the second bloom is more modest.

  • The flowers are collected in clusters that end each shoot, so that during flowering almost no leaves are visible, only the flower caps.

  • At the base of each petal there is a purple-blue spot that closes into a wide circle around the middle.

  • The center of the rose flower with large fluffy stamens, which look contrasting against the background of the purple spot on the petals, has a special charm.

  • As befits floribundas, the rose is unpretentious and winter-hardy.

Gebruder Grimm (Gebruder Grimm)

Another spectacular floribunda – varietyGebruder Grimm (Brothers Grimm). The inside of the petals is orange and the outside is yellow. Over time, the rose changes color to peach. It is absolutely winter-hardy and unpretentious, the only negative is the slightly weak shoots, which sink downwards under the weight of the flowers, so you can’t do without supports.

  4. The rose’s winter hardiness is excellent,

  5. Suitable for rose garden backgrounds and single compositions.

Roses Scrubs for the Moscow region

Among the scrubs, the bright one became a favorite Robusta. Some catalogs classify it as a variety of rose hips. It blooms all summer, takes a break for two weeks, and forms a fluffy bush up to 1-1.5 m high.

For the winter, I still bend down its branches using a heavy wooden shield and put a piece of roofing felt on top. Once I tried to leave it without shelter, as some publications recommend doing with scrubs. The result was disastrous: the rose had to grow all its branches from scratch, and it did not bloom that year. Since then I have closed all my roses for the winter, and for 10 years there have been no attacks.
